Vitalik Buterin recently tweeted about the potential of Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs) and their governance tokens. In this tweet, he discussed how these tokens can provide a means for users to have a stake in a project. He also noted that he hasn't seen an attack where an attacker has purchased a significant stake to destroy a project. However, it is possible for an attacker to purchase hash power in a Proof-of-Work (PoW) system and use it to attack the network. But, buying a sufficient stake to sink a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) protocol seems almost futile. Therefore, while DAOs and their governance tokens offer a great way to decentralize control and provide users with a stake in the project, it is important to remember that there are still potential risks and attackers may still try to find ways to destroy a project.

I think vitalik is talking more about DAOs with their governance tokens, not related to pow or pos

haven't seen an attack, usually it doesn't make much sense to buy a stake and zero it yourself

Are there any know cases where an attacker has purchased a significant stake to destroy a project? Buying hash power is a bit more malleable in PoW (since you can buy it for a short time and it can be used in other pow chains), but buying a sufficient stake to sink a PoS protocol seems almost futile
